On the night of August 2022: a small, attentive audience sits crosslegged on the floor of Chicago’s 60 Cycle Hummingbird Studio. Bodies alternate with amplifiers, drums, mic stands, and the band members themselves. The scene conjures memories not our own: be-ins, mid-60s London pot parties, the Bay Area in its heyday, Kingston or Cologne at the inception of new consciousness. In lieu of candles, two dozen fireflies and a lone gold foretooth tickled by the moon’s secondhand glow dance tarantellas and flicker practically in time with the music. For just over forty minutes all those present hurtle headlong into the Wonkaesque tunnel of names_of_music’s wooly, fleet-besotted obsessions with time, saturation, limits at their limits, storytelling untold, glacial scale, freedom curtailed, zooming in/out/a/round/between, and falling slowly fast asleep merely for the sake of eventually waking up. Lilylike, like lilacs. Tag along. Bring imaginary friends. Refreshments provided. And remember: it’s not a mistake if you didn’t mean not to do it.
